Intergenerational Learning Action Circle (IGLAC)

Intergenerational Learning and Action Circles (IGLAC) are open, flexible, safe spaces that enhance authentic “unlearning and learning” and facilitate participants abilities to act on water, climate and/or environmental equity issues. Within a circle, 10-16 people gather over 5 – 6 weeks to engage in a series of conversations, structured to help them develop a common equity vocabulary and an “equity lens” with which they can analyze environmental issues in their community. Workshop participants include high school and college aged, young adults and seasoned community activists. Ideally, the community will sustain the Circle so residents can utilize its structure to focus on other community goals and issues even after the project is completed.  Each Circle focuses on a specific environmental topic. Participants share stories, best practices and lessons learned through intergenerational conversations to create a multi-neighborhood learning community. They also engage in deepening dialogue about equity and how it – or the lack of it – appears in their community while developing and strengthening relationships with each other.   Workshop facilitators also introduce an equity based decision-making process to guide them toward action.
